It is always a great day when you get to enjoy where you live. Often times we forget to stop and smell the flowers (or in this case, the Wine). One thing about living in a destination town is you get visitors. (Strange fact, I had very few while living in Hawaii) We have had visitors in Sonoma almost all summer, (I love that.) Sharing your special life with other happy humans makes you realize how fortunate you are.
Joining my friend Jenny from Florida and some local girlfriends at Three Sticks this summer was such a great experience. This is an appointment only tasting room that is right downtown Sonoma, there are few signs to tell you it is there. You just have to know it is the beautiful door somewhere next to El Dorado Kitchen.
The tasting starts with a fresh glass of their famous 2017 Castenada Rose’. It is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, and Viognier. The tasting notes say it is “Plush and Pluncky.’ Perfect description.
It must be the most photographed bottle of Rose’ in wine country. While sipping on this fresh glass of yumminess, you get a tour of this old Adobe building that is so informative and incredibly renovated.
The decor is tastefully done in a retro/vintage style.
The back courtyard is this private oasis that is beautifully landscaped with plants that are 100’s of years old. There are also misters (not to be confused with Mr.) that have been thoughtfully placed to keep you cool but not wet. Perfect on a hot day with that chilled wine.
You can sit under the pergola at a long table outside or be whisked away into the back cavelike room for a more intimate tasting that has a beautiful long table and a fun light that makes you feel all cozy.
The setting is classy and well thought out with these incredible tasting notes that the wine geek in me loves.
There are two 2016 Chardonnay’s, The Durell Vineyard is from the Sonoma Coast and done in a Concrete Egg, I absolutely love the crispness of it. The Gap’s Crown is also Sonoma Coast, done in 100% French Oak, it has the qualities that one loves in an Oaky Chardonnay. The 2015 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara Is outstanding, smooth and delicate but full of fun flavors bouncing around on your tongue. The 2016 PFV Estate Pinot Noir is equally as lovely with a bit of a deeper taste that leaves you just wanting more. There is also a surprise taste on a beautiful Moon Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. I am a sucker for anything from Moon Mountain.
Look for this little gem this fall…..
If you happen to be lucky enough to be in their wine club, you can sit in their back area and enjoy a bottle of these amazing wines with some friends on a beautiful summer evening. Just give them a call and make sure they have no other events scheduled.
